Empowerment Workshop for Middle School Students with Jamie Colleen Miller!

This school year we’re excited to announce we’ll be hosting a 3 week Empowerment Workshop for middle school students! At Control Lab we understand the importance of self defense and the confidence it can give anyone, especially our children. Below is a breakdown of what parents and children can expect from our Empowerment Workshop and our amazing instructor Jamie Colleen Miller!

Part 1: Back to School Confidence Building

Objective:
Help students feel confident and prepared for the new school year.
Equip them with social skills and strategies to navigate the school environment successfully.

Activities:
1. Icebreaker Games:

Fun activities to help students get to know each other and build a sense of community.

2. Role-Playing Scenarios:

Practice common school situations (e.g., meeting new classmates, asking for help) to build social confidence.
3. Goal Setting:

Encourage students to set personal and academic goals for the year. 4. Stress Management Techniques:

Teach simple mindfulness and relaxation exercises to handle school-related stress.

Part 2: Bully Prevention

Objective:
Educate students on recognizing, preventing, and addressing bullying.
Empower them to stand up for themselves and others in a safe and respectful manner.

Activities:
1. Understanding Bullying:

Define bullying, its forms (physical, verbal, cyber), and its effects.

2. Recognizing Bullying Behavior:

Interactive discussions on identifying bullying behavior in themselves and others.

3. Empathy Exercises:

Activities that promote empathy and understanding, such as perspective-taking and sharing personal experiences.
4. Bystander Intervention:

Teach strategies for safely intervening when witnessing bullying, including seeking help from adults.

Part 3: Self-Defense Basics

Objective:
Teach students basic self-defense techniques to protect themselves in dangerous situations. Build physical confidence and awareness.

Activities:

1. Safety Awareness:
Discuss the importance of being aware of their surroundings and trusting their instincts.

2. Basic Self-Defense Moves:
- Teach simple and effective self-defense techniques, such as blocking, escaping holds, and

striking.
3. Practical Drills:

Practice self-defense moves in controlled scenarios to build muscle memory and confidence. 4. De-escalation Techniques:

Learn ways to defuse confrontational situations verbally before they escalate to physical altercations.

Implementation Details:
Duration: Each workshop can be held over a series of three sessions, with each session lasting 1 hour.
Materials Needed: Comfortable clothing, a safe practice area, and any necessary props or instructional materials.
Games: Implement games to keep the kids engaged and having fun.

Outcome:
Students will gain confidence, understand how to prevent and respond to bullying, and acquire basic self-defense skills, preparing them for a safer and more successful school year!
